How to price ad space on your website
A practical framework for pricing website sponsorships — flat rates, packages, and how to adjust after your first few deals.
By AdsRoster
Pricing ad space is uncomfortable the first time. Charge too little and you train the market. Charge too much and nobody replies.
Treat the first price as a hypothesis you will revise.
Anchor on value, not guilt
Sponsors pay for access to your audience in a trusted context. Your price should reflect:
- How targeted the audience is
- How visible the placement is
- How long it runs
- Whether the spot is exclusive
A small, highly relevant site can charge more per thousand visits than a large general one.
Three simple pricing models
1. Flat monthly rate
Easiest to sell and invoice. Example: “Homepage banner — ₦150,000 / 30 days.”
Good for first inventory.
2. Packages
Bundle placements: homepage + category page + newsletter mention (if you have one). Packages raise average deal size and feel more “complete” to sponsors.
3. Exclusive vs shared
Exclusive homepage rights command a premium. Shared rotation is cheaper but harder to explain and easier to oversell. Prefer exclusive for premium slots when you are starting.
A starter formula (not a law)
One workable starting point:
- Estimate monthly visits to the placement’s page.
- Pick a CPM-style benchmark for your niche (what similar sites charge, if you can find it).
- Convert to a flat monthly number.
- Round to a clean figure.
- Offer a small discount for 3-month commitments.
Example: 40,000 monthly visits to a category page × a conservative value assumption → a flat monthly rate you can say out loud without apologizing.
If you have no comps, pick a number you would be happy to fulfill for 30 days of work and support. Then adjust based on response rate.
What to include in the price
Be explicit:
- Placement location and size
- Dates
- Creative specs
- Number of revisions
- Reporting (impressions/clicks if you track them)
Ambiguity creates renegotiation.
When to raise prices
Raise when:
- Spots sell out
- You have a waitlist
- Your traffic or authority clearly grew
- Sponsors renew without pushing back
Do not raise mid-flight on an active booking. Change the rate card for new deals.
Payments and ops
Price is only half the job. You also need clean checkout and payouts. See how website sponsorship payments should work.
With AdsRoster, pricing lives on the spot — sponsors book against availability instead of negotiating every invoice from scratch.
Takeaway
Start with clear flat rates on a few placements. Package carefully. Raise when demand proves you underpriced. Perfect pricing is less important than closing a few clean deals and learning.
